Abstract

The Public Speaking course at UMP used to be conducted in a blended-learning environment. The COVID19 pandemic, however, has necessitated changes in the way courses are offered. Developing Public Speaking skills could be quite a complex process as learners need authentic practice, and need to be provided with feedback on their speech performance, in order to further improve their speech presentation skills. The conversion of the Public Speaking course to an online platform needed to take these into consideration, and was accomplished via adaptation of Gagne’s Nine Events of Instructions. This exploratory study aims to investigate the learners’ strategies in mastering Public Speaking skills in an online environment. Data were obtained via a questionnaire survey, and triangulated with observation and structured interviews. Findings show that in general, learners applied both the Cognitive and Metacognitive Strategies (rehearsal, organization, critical thinking and metacognitive self-regulation) and Resource Management Strategies (time and study environment, effective regulation, peer learning and help seeking). The implications emerging from this study indicate that with some adaptations, Public Speaking skills could be enhanced in an outline environment.
