Investigating Internet Communication Disorder among Students Using Social Media During the Pandemic

Abstract


The COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on movement increased educational dependency on the Internet. Overnight, the Internet which was mostly a supplementary item in teaching and learning transforms to a vital item. The change in role also brings along numerous consequences. One of the  limitations was the limited guidelines to ensure reliable use of social media as a communication medium while limiting cyberloafing activities during the learning process. The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of Internet Communication Disorder (ICD), the level of social media usage and the level of cyberloafing among college students while coping with the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on movement (also known as MCO). One hundred and eleven undergraduate students from three higher education institution participated in this study. They were chosen using the purposive sampling technique. Three questionnaires; Social Media Usage Questionnaire (SMUQ), Cyberloafing Questionnaire (CLQ) and Modified version of the Short Internet Addiction Test for Internet communication disorder (s-IAT-ICD) was adapted in the study. The main results showed that most of the items was in the moderate high level. In comparison, the study also discussed on the items with moderate low level.  A mixed findings in all the indicated levels was also obtained from both gender.
